Introducing: Digital Fallout
This is Digital Fallout, a free newsletter about the impact of tech on human rights in the global south.
Many of today’s technologies are designed with a Western audience in mind, but are then scaled globally without enough understanding, thought or care put into how they would play out in different countries, especially non-democratic countries. Think the use of Facebook to incite violence in Myanmar, WhatsApp in the last elections in Brazil, or the use of biometric IDs for aid in Afghanistan.
In addition to looking at the havoc companies are often wreaking with their technologies, I’ll also be looking into how various governments are responding to technological change—through regulation, censorship, or launching new tools to suppress dissent.
A curated roundup of news, investigations, and thoughtful analysis, Digital Fallout might be useful for policy people, journalists, activists, NGO researchers, academics, and technologists.
